What's happenin y'all
We're super excited to be kicking off WINTER WARZ with a birthday celebration for one of the originators of this global running community, Mike Saes. Our first time running this was in 2018 to celebrate Saes' 48th, which we were tricked into doing but, this run in many ways ended up being sort of a benchmark for OMRC in terms of providing more than "just a run" for our Saturdays - this was also the first time we met now co-captain, Felipe. A similar route was drawn up again to celebrate his 49th, and with OMRC being 1 Yrs old we had a bigger squad to bring along for the fun. Fast forward 5 years, the OG Old Man is turning 54 and it felt like a good time to bring back one of our favorite runs ever.
So officially, the "OMRC" part of the run will cover the first 10.5 miles of the route. Moziah will be on hand for bag check and the route will end by Yankee Stadium. The subway station is real close and will be easy for everyone to get to where they need to. The run will be very casual, 9 - 10min pace.
For those looking to do something a "little" extra though, this is where it gets spicy! The route continues through the Bronx and then up through lower Westchester with the real goal being Kensico Dam in Valhalla. If you've always wanted to have a fun casual ultra notched in your belt this is definitely a good one!! There will be plenty of breaks, car support, snacks, and hot cocoa for everyone. We usually try and get in some french fries from Nathan's too. Once you're in Westchester you'll run one of the best trails (it's not an actual trail but a paved walkway) with no cars for about 10+ miles. The route will also take you to a couple of Metro North stops - Bronxville // Crestwood // White Plains in case you've had your fill and need to peace out. For those that make it to the damn dam, the group will be heading to Valhalla Crossing for eats and drinks. Yo, that post 30mile burger and spiked hot cocoa hits like nothing other!!! All this is a quick walk to the Valhalla Metro North station. The train runs every 30mins and is about a 50min ride back to Grand Central.
This is a really great run. If you've got a chill Saturday planned this is a great way to spend it. We went in thinking we were going to run 16miles back in 2018 but somehow kept going for the entire ride. Was it easy, hell no. But the group we ran with and the support we had definitely made it possible.
WE'RE NOT DONE!
We are also super happy to announce that O(W)RC will be fielding our second team for WOMEN TAKE THE BRIDGE. We've got Chloe Icay, Aisha Qamar, Adrienne Ahn and Alyssa Kearns lined up. We really want to show up for these 4 super stars, would be super dope to come cheer for these guys. Race HQ is Brooklyn Running Co in Williamsburg and the race starts @ 7:45PM. If you're running to Westchester, it might be a little too tight but if you're keeping it a little shorter please come support! While we're at it, should out to Emily, Iliana, Piku and Melissa from Team One - that was a cool and fun night too.
Peep the route and info below!
Peace, OMRC
